Two-time Olympic champion Michele Gisin has announced her retirement from Alpine skiing following a severe crash in downhill training. The Swiss athlete, 32, sustained multiple injuries in the incident, which occurred in November 2023. Gisin, who won gold in both 2010 and 2014, made the decision after 11 months of recovery and rehabilitation.
Doctors confirmed that Gisin suffered significant damage to her knees and lower back during the crash. She had previously undergone surgery and was in the process of rebuilding her strength and endurance. Despite her efforts, Gisin stated that the physical and mental toll of returning to competition was too great.
Gisin’s retirement marks the end of a storied career that included multiple World Cup victories and a place in the Olympic history books. She had been preparing for the 2026 Winter Games in Milan-Cortina but now plans to focus on other pursuits. Her decision comes as the sport continues to grapple with the risks of high-speed downhill racing.
