A military fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta killed four soldiers and injured dozens during a training exercise. The incident occurred on Saturday, overwhelming personnel in a training area.
The blaze started at CFB Wainwright, southeast of Edmonton, during a training exercise involving 84 members of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. Firefighters arrived quickly but struggled to contain the flames. Four soldiers lost their lives, with 39 others hospitalized.
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed national mourning, stating the government will seek answers from the military investigation. A grass fire, which spread rapidly, was the cause. The military is conducting its own inquiry into the incident.
The fire has sparked a surge in public support, with Canadian Blood Services noting increased donations. A veteran from Newfoundland and Labrador shared his grief, highlighting the national impact.
This is the second major incident at CFB Wainwright in recent months. Last year, a similar fire at the same base resulted in injuries but no fatalities. The military has since implemented additional safety measures.
The current tragedy has raised questions about training protocols and emergency response at military installations. Officials are reviewing procedures to prevent future incidents.
