First Light hosted the annual Sisters in Spirit Vigil in St. John’s on October 4. The event, organized in collaboration with the St. John’s Status of Women Council, marked the annual gathering to honor Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.

The vigil took place as part of a national initiative in Canada. Each year on October 4, communities across the country hold vigils to remember those who have been missing or murdered. The event included speeches, moments of silence, and community participation.

The Sisters in Spirit campaign began in 2017 as a response to the high number of missing Indigenous women. It aims to raise awareness and push for justice. The vigil in St. John’s was one of many held across Canada, reflecting ongoing efforts to address systemic issues affecting Indigenous communities.
