Masks are now required in all healthcare facilities across Newfoundland and Labrador. The new rule, effective Wednesday at 8:00 a.M. Applies to healthcare workers, volunteers, and visitors. Masks are mandatory in all areas where patients are present, including inpatient units.
The decision follows a rise in respiratory illnesses in the province. Health officials cited increased cases as the main reason for the mandate. The requirement applies to all individuals entering healthcare settings, regardless of vaccination status.
This is the second time masks have been mandated in healthcare facilities in Newfoundland. The previous mandate was lifted earlier this year as cases declined. The current measure aims to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, including influenza and respiratory syncytial virus.
Healthcare workers and volunteers have been advised to follow the new guidelines. The province has not announced any penalties for non-compliance. The measure is part of broader efforts to manage public health risks during the winter season.
The province has also called for more federal funding for healthcare. Finance Minister Craig Pardy noted the need for additional resources to support the healthcare system. The new mask mandate reflects the ongoing challenges in managing public health during seasonal outbreaks.
