A third person has died in a collision involving a truck and pedestrians outside a mall in Delta, British Columbia, on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The incident occurred on September 30, 2024, when a truck struck several individuals near the South Delta Mall. Gwenyth Brigit Dwyn, a 64-year-old resident of South Delta, was confirmed dead as a result of the crash.
Authorities initially reported two fatalities, both of whom were elders from the Tsawwassen First Nation. The third death was confirmed by Delta police following an investigation. The crash happened during a time when the country was observing National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day dedicated to remembering the legacy of residential schools and advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
This is the second major incident involving a vehicle and pedestrians in the area this year. The first occurred in March 2024, when a similar collision resulted in multiple injuries. Both incidents have raised concerns about road safety in the region.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, held annually on September 30, is a day of remembrance and reflection for Indigenous communities. The timing of the crash has added a layer of significance to the tragedy, highlighting the intersection of public commemoration and public safety.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the collision and are working with local Indigenous leaders to address the impact of the incident on the community. No further details about the driver or the circumstances of the crash have been released.
