Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned Monday that his country would retaliate if Russia failed to agree to an energy ceasefire announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. Zelenskyy made the statement during a virtual address at the Warsaw Security Forum.
Zelenskyy stated that Russia had continued to strike Ukraine’s energy infrastructure despite Trump’s claim of an agreement. The U.S. President had previously announced that Russia and Ukraine had reached a deal for Russia to supply over 300,000 tonnes of diesel to the U.S. And global markets.
Zelenskyy’s warning came after Trump tweeted that the agreement was reached. However, Zelenskyy expressed skepticism, stating that Russia had not stopped its attacks on Ukraine’s energy systems.
U.S. Senators from both parties have raised concerns about the legality of Trump’s deal with Russia. Seven senators issued a statement questioning whether the agreement violated U.S. Law.
China has also expressed caution about the deal, with observers suggesting Beijing will monitor its long-term impact. The U.S. President’s actions have sparked mixed reactions in global markets, with Asian shares showing a mixed performance.
The situation highlights growing tensions between the U.S. And its allies over Trump’s diplomatic moves. Zelenskyy’s response underscores the uncertainty surrounding the proposed ceasefire and its potential impact on the ongoing conflict.
