Alberta's government has announced it will launch a formal request for private companies to submit proposals for a high-speed rail system connecting Edmonton, Red Deer, and Calgary. The project, part of a broader effort to improve regional transportation, is set to begin this fall. Premier Danielle Smith emphasized the importance of the initiative, noting that Ottawa has agreed to refer the project to its major projects office once a proposal is submitted.
The high-speed rail plan aims to reduce travel time between downtown Calgary and downtown Edmonton to just over an hour and 45 minutes. This would significantly enhance connectivity across Alberta’s largest cities. The initiative follows discussions between Alberta and Ontario leaders, where Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed support for similar infrastructure projects, including the proposed Northern Shield Energy Corridor.
While the focus remains on the rail project, the collaboration between Alberta and Ontario highlights growing interest in regional infrastructure development. The government is now seeking private sector involvement to bring the plan to life, with the expectation of a formal proposal process soon.
