Sun Peaks, a ski resort in British Columbia, has become the first in Canada to implement Finnish snow farming technology. The system, known as snow blankets, involves using specialized materials to retain snow on slopes during warmer periods. This technique has shown promising results in extending the ski season and reducing reliance on artificial snowmaking.
The project, launched in the winter of 2023, involved the installation of over 1,200 snow blankets across key slopes at the resort. These blankets are designed to insulate the snow from heat and sunlight, slowing its melting. Early data suggests that the technique has increased snow retention by up to 30% in test areas compared to traditional methods. However, the effectiveness varied depending on local weather conditions and slope orientation.
Snow farming has gained attention as a potential solution to declining snowfall due to climate change. In Finland, the technology has been used for decades to maintain ski conditions in regions with limited natural snow. The Canadian initiative aims to adapt this method to the unique climatic conditions of the Pacific Northwest.
This experiment marks a significant step in sustainable snow management. If successful, it could influence other resorts across Canada to adopt similar practices. The results of the trial will be analyzed in the coming months to determine its long-term viability and potential for wider application.
