The Yukon and Canadian governments have approved a $2.7 million investment to support the first phase of construction for Big Blue Daycare in Dawson City, Yukon. The funding comes from the Yukon’s early learning and child care infrastructure fund, which aims to improve access to quality child care services.
The grant will cover initial construction costs, including site preparation and building materials. The daycare is expected to open in early 2025, providing care for up to 60 children aged 0 to 5. The project is part of a broader initiative to expand early childhood education infrastructure across the Yukon.
The funding reflects a growing government focus on supporting child care as a key component of early education. The Yukon government has previously announced plans to increase the number of licensed child care spaces by 20% over the next three years. The Canadian federal government has also pledged increased support for child care programs in response to rising demand and workforce challenges.
