Premier Danielle Smith has publicly criticized Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi over the failure of a major water pipe in Calgary. The criticism comes after a provincially commissioned report found that during Nenshi’s tenure as mayor, his office did not implement recommendations from a consultancy firm aimed at improving utility services.
The report highlighted that key recommendations regarding infrastructure maintenance were not brought to city council. Smith accused Nenshi of making a deliberate choice to ignore the advice, which contributed to the failure of a critical water pipe. The incident has raised questions about the management of essential services in the city.
This is not the first time Smith has targeted Nenshi. Earlier this year, she criticized him over delays in the province’s hospital triage program. Despite the ongoing delays, she claimed that six emergency rooms now have triage teams in place. The hospital program was announced in January as part of broader efforts to improve emergency care.
The water pipe failure has sparked local debate about accountability in municipal governance. While the report focuses on past decisions, it has reignited discussions about the need for transparency and effective implementation of infrastructure plans. The situation underscores the challenges of managing public services in a rapidly growing city.
